Steyn, Maclean's Magazine & FreeDominion Demand Open Tribunal Hearing in Lemire Case

Written by Paul Fromm

Freedom loving Canadians are angry. Journalist Mark Steyn, whose writings have been victimized by no fewer than three human rights complaints, and Maclean's Magazine, a victim of a Sec. 13 by four radical Moslems, are demanding a hearing open to the public, March 25, when two Canadian Human Rights Commission investigators are back on the witness stand.

Back in May, 2007, the hearing was closed to the public for "security" reasons, despite government paid bodyguards for the CHRC lawyers, and rent-a-cops and Ottawa City Police on the hearing doors. The trial of "Junior" Soprano had less muscle. But even that was not enough. Then Commission lawyer Giacomo Vigna, citing three fat volumes of Internet posts, had pleaded "security" issues, with conspiracy theories that would have made the wildest John Bircher seem moderate.

Both Maclean's and Steyn insist they want to attend. Freedominion, itself the victim of lead CHRC investigator (and now witness) Dean Steacy's Internet spying want to attend, as do a whole host of angry Canadians.

If you think the hearings should be open, March 25 and/or if you'd like to attend, make your views known to CHRT Registrar Ghislaine Cyr thus:

As followers of the Canadian thought police will know, the March 25th hearings at the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal will feature employees of the Canadian Human Rights Commission being cross-examined on their dubious tactics of posting anonymously at "hate" websites. In other words, it is standard working practice to allow CHRC "investigators" potentially to create the crimes they prosecute. It would be as if Governor Spitzer had a ball with his call girl and then charged her and her agency with prostitution.

Needless to say, the "human rights" enforcers, who claim to be empowered to police not only your public expression but also your private thoughts, don't want to expose their own words, thoughts and beliefs to the same scrutiny. So they've decided to hold this important hearing in secret. Free societies do not hold secret trials except for the most serious reasons of national security: mid-level servants of the Crown who get their jollies by posing as racists on unread websites do not fall into that category. Maclean's and I believe this hearing should be open. My editors have written to the Tribunal requesting permission for me and a staff reporter to attend.

The Tribunal is now taking submissions from other parties as to why these proceedings should be open. The lady to contact - by March 17th at the latest - is Ghislaine Cyr, and you can find all the details here - including the important advice that any emails and letters to Mme Cyr should be impeccably civil. If the proceedings are opened up, it would be nice to see someone other than the Maclean's delegation on the press benches.

CHRC taking submissions on issue of closed hearing! WRITE!

The CHRC has said that they will take submissions from the public on the ssue of the closed Warman v Lemire tribunal hearing, but the submissions must be made by March 17th.

Please write a polite and professional letter to Ms Jessie Cyr outlining why ou believe the hearing should be public.

If you can't write a polite letter, PLEASE DON'T WRITE. You will only hurt our case.

Here is my submission:

Re: Warman v Lemire (T1073/5405)

Dear Ms Cyr
I am writing to request that the Warman v Lemire tribunal hearing that is scheduled for March 25, 2008 be open to the public.

It has come to our attention that evidence will be given that suggests that CHRC investigator Dean Steacy created an anonymous account on a website we owned shortly before a CHRC complaint was filed against us.

In addition, the Warman v Lemire case has become widely known on the Canadian internet, and many website owners feel that the outcome of this case willhave far-reaching implications in regard to their free speech, and that of their members.

We feel that the presence of media and public observers would serve to increase security at the hearing. Since members of the internet community wish to see this matter dealt with in a speedy and professional manner, it is our desire to help maintain a safe and peaceful environment so that the Tribunal feels safe keeping the hearing open and public, so many sets of eyes will be on the lookout for disruptors.

Thank you very much in advance for considering this request.

Sincerely,
Connie and Mark Fournier
